The original team, which competed in the open division was founded "in spring 2001 under the name Kamikaze Snow Leopards" Originally an intramural team, they competed in interstate events, namely its first official tournament, the Midwestern Classic in Madison, WI. The team went 0-6 on the weekend. Despite the original setback, the team proved themselves at sectionals and made it to regionals.
Come fall, students Brian Babbitt and Kali Pace collaborated "collaborated ... to turn their intramural ultimate frisbee team into [an official] recreational sport club." That season, the club hosted their first-ever home tournament at the tournament at "the soccer complex on Hamilton Road." Nine teams competed. The Leopards took second to Carleton with a final score of 7-15.
At the time, the club had approximately "20 tournament team members and more than 100 non-competitive club members are participating" which was outstanding during the transition from an intramural to a club sport.
The team rebranded itself with that name that we have come to know and love. Pace, one of the founders was quoted saying “Eau Claire ultimate frisbee grew so much this fall...I think this was the time where we truly became a team."
To start their spring season in 2003, the team took a "trip to Baton Rouge (La.)" where they competed in the "Mardi Gras Tournament"
